Painting a casement window:
-
With the window closed cut in around the glass and paint any horizontal and
vertical glazing bars there mey be, starting at the top and working down(
2 in the diagram).
-
Open the window and paint the back edge of the sash(1).
-
Optionally you can paint the rebate of the frame(at 1) to which the window
hinges are fixed. Sometimes the sashes have sliding brackets at top and bottom
instead of hinges. These must be kept free from paint to prevent sticking.
-
Paint face of sash next.(3).
-
Paint the inner side of the frame(4).
-
Cut in the edge next to the wall and paint face of frame(5).
-
Finally paint the sill(6) doing the underneath first then both ends and the
front edge, finishing with the top surface.
Tips.
Paint windows as early in the day as possible so that they will be dry to
close at night otherwise they may stick.
Using masking tape to protect the glass will make your cutting-in job easier,
but do not remove the tape until the paint is dry.
Removing window fittings keeps them clean and makes for a better paint
finish.
If you need something to hold the sash after taking off the fittings use
a suction cap on the glass or put a screw partially back into one of the
screw holes.
