Chinese style and design.
For centuries, the Chinese have lived their lives surrounded by simple, yet elegant, furnishings, furniture, and art.
Chinese interiors are designed to bring peace, balance, and serenity to the space, which is kept simple and uncluttered. Furniture and ornaments exhibit great craftmanship.
One of the favourite interior colors in Chinese homes is a strong red contrasting with glossy black lacquered furniture. Gold trim and edging is also much favoured.
Although highly polished wood surfaces are the norm, there is also a heavy accent on natural textures such as wood, bamboo, paper, dried grasses and stone.
Green plants rather than flowers give a nature touch and plants in pots are often decorated with gold and red tassles.
Beautifully designed rugs are another special feature of Chinese homes.
Elaborately decorated screens are used for room dividers and hiding areas from view.
Water features are sometimes included, but with all Chinese design balance between ornament and simplicity is the object.
Chinese decorating, with its perfectly balanced yet complex beauty, is typically made up of vibrantly colored patterns and textured objects set against darkly wooded furniture. Ivory carved figurines, porcelain vases, lacquered fixtures, bamboo, scenic tapestry and wall hangings, all serve to set a mystic and harmonious environment.
Chinese decorating is often much more lavish than what you will find in the minimalist Japanese design.
Chinese colours and their approximate meanings:
GREEN
Peace, thoughtfulness, and family.
RED
Celebration, good luck, being strong and happy.
YELLOW or GOLD
Long and healthy life.
PURPLE
Spirituality.
BLACK
Bad luck and suffering.
WHITE
Death and disaster.
Ceramics, which are crafted from highly refined clay and superheated to a smooth glossy finish, are mostly found in Chinese decor in the form of vases, statues and pottery. White porcelain, which can have a variety of other pigments glazed into it, is the highest quality of ceramics and thus the most sought after today.
