How to make Milk Paint

Originally all paint had to be made from natural, environmentally friendly materials.
One of the most common and easily made is Milk Paint.
Milk paint has been made for hundreds of years and much of it survives to this day.

You can use quite a wide range of ingredients, most of which can be found in the home; with the exception of hydrated lime, which you can get easily from any builders stockists.
This is the same hydrated lime that you would use when making whitewash.

  • Powdered milk

  • Natural vegetable and plant colors(e.g.beetroot)

  • Hydrated lime. Milk paint can be made without hydrated lime but it is not as good and it goes off very quick.

Making Paint with Skimmed Milk.
  • Quantities depends on what you are going to paint. 2 pints of skimmed milk will be enough for a small ceiling. 8 pints will do the walls of a small bedroom.

  • Add one tablespoon of hydrated lime for each pint of skimmed milk.

  • Use a small amount of the skimmed milk to the quantity of hydrated lime you need to use. Don't use too much milk; it is better to start with a tiny amount and add more as is required.

The object is to create a nice smooth cream of the hydrated lime. If you put in too much skimmed milk straight away it will cause the mixture to be lumpy.

  • When you have a nice smooth cream slowly stir in the remainder of the skimmed milk.

  • You can now add the coloring pigment to your own taste.

  • If you don't add color it will dry out white.
