Woodwork: common problems
-
Resin is bleeding through my finished paintwork
-
Resin usually comes from knots in new wood. Before painting all knots and
any bits which look a much darker colour should be treated with a Knotting
solution. Specially designed Knotting bottles are available, where the brush
is incorporated into the lid. if you use an ordinary paintbrush to apply
the knotting remember that it dries extremely quickly( in ideal conditions
less than a minute)so keep the brush in the knotting when not in use.
-
White Marks, Removing from Polished Surfaces .
-
White marks on French-polished and similar surfaces are usually the result
of standing hot dishes, jugs, etc., and are caused by condensed moisture
penetrating the film which the heat has softened. Such marks can sometimes
be removed by rubbing the surface with a mixture of linseed oil (or sweet
oil) and methylated spirit; alternatively, place several thicknesses of clean
white blotting-paper over the mark and go over the paper with a warm iron.
This may soften the film sufficiently to allow the moisture to be drawn out
by the heat.
-
While either of these treatments is worth trying, it must be added that they
are not likely to be successful if the marks are of long standing.
-
Paint runs on woodwork and doors
-
Sand out the run completely, dust off and touch up with undercoat before
applying the finish coat.
-
Finish coat has not covered the undercoat very well
-
Apply a second coat of finish as soon as the first one is dry; paint makers
often recommend two coats of finish for certain colours such as reds and
yellows.
