Exteriors: common problems

Paint is flaking off the render(where the brickwork has been faced with mortar)
Sometimes this is caused by the wall coating being applied before the render was dry or applied during a period of frost. All loose paint and render must be removed and repaired. repaint during ideal conditions.
Paint blisters on old paintwork
On old paintwork blisters and cracking can be scraped off and sanded down but it is better to remove the old paint completely by burning it off, either with a blowlamp or hot air gun. Chemical paint stripper can be used as an alternative. Where the paint is very old a blowlamp/blowtorch is the best choice.
Flies landing on wet paint
If the flies are small ignore them; on primer and undercoats they will disappear when you rub down the paintwork. On gloss finish paintwork allow the paint to dry and harden completely then wipe with a soft damp cloth to remove any traces of flies.
Paint flaking off metal doors and gates
Galvanized metal must have a suitable zinc primer before painting otherwise the paint will fail to adhere to the surface.
