Estimates, quotes and prices
-
If I get an estimate for a job, how do I know that it is reasonable?
-
The best way is to try and get at least three estimates from similar kinds
of traders. A large company will obviously charge more(because of their
overheads) than a sole trader, so price comparisons between them would be
unfair. Going for the cheapest is sometimes risky.
-
How much of a deposit should I pay in advance?
-
A reputable company or a genuine tradesman will not ask for money in advance,
even to cover the cost of materials. Cowboys and con-men, on the other hand,
almost always ask for cash in advance. You may want to buy the materials yourself. Most tradesmen don't mind this as long as you buy good quality materials.
-
What is the difference between a quote and an estimate?
-
An estimate is just that and will possibly change; a quote is firm price
for the project and should also include the precise time-frame for the project.
