The National Construction College was officially launched in July 1998. The
college is a natural amalgamation of Bircham Newton Training Centre and the
Civil Engineering College, with its aims still firmly set on providing the
construction industry with a suitably qualified workforce. The training facility
was founded by the Construction Industry Training Board in the mid 60s,
with a mission to train young people as skilled operatives and potential
supervisors in the construction industry.
During the last 30 years 7500 young people from all over the UK have attended
the college. The courses are designed to develop practical skills, instil
safety awareness and build character, the aim being to equip the trainee
for a career in construction, not just a job.
Training
All college courses are based on a programme combining site work, spent with
a construction company, and residential training at the college. The residential
periods last between 4 and 43 weeks
1997 saw the introduction of Modern Apprenticeships for Scaffolders and Plant
Mechanics. Trainees on both courses can now work towards achieving NVQ Level
3.
New for 1998 are National Traineeships, which will be available on most courses
leading towards NVQ Level 2.
The National Construction College has superb training facilities. These closely
resemble conditions found on site and are used extensively by the college.
Trainees have the opportunity of personal development by working as part
of a team and, as they progress, having the chance to take the lead. They
have the responsibility of organising their team into a productive gang and
assisting with its welfare needs.
Welfare
All residential trainees have full use of the many sports and leisure facilities,
including: a 25 metre heated indoor swimming pool, floodlit football pitches,
squash and tennis courts, and multi gym. The College club becomes the centre
of activity outside training times where snooker, darts, pool and table tennis
are available and, for the less energetic, there are TV lounges linked to
satellite music and sporting channels.
Three full meals, hot and cold, are available every day in the trainees
restaurant. Special dietary needs can be catered for. In addition the College
club has its own diner serving light refreshments and hot snacks.
Each trainee has their own private room within the college accommodation
complex. Clean bed linen and personal laundry are provided on a weekly basis.
Fees and grants
There is no cost to the trainee for attending the course at The National
Construction College. Most young people are employed by a construction company
who will pay an allowance and provide the relevant site work experience.
Employers who are in-scope and registered with the CITB are entitled to grants
that will cover College course fees and assist with the trainees allowance.
Company representatives, parents and potential trainees are welcome to visit
the college during term time to view the facilities and talk to residents.
If you prefer, a member of our staff will be happy to arrange a presentation
at your convenience. Contact the College if you require further assistance
or information. Tel: 01485 577775 and ask for Maria Crompton
The Job
The Apprentice Painter is the junior member of the construction team. Based
in the paint shop at one of the main studios at either Pinewood or Shepperton.
Apprentices will be working alongside the Head of Department (HOD),Supervisor
or one of the 'Master Painters'. Duties include general painting and decorating
of flats for the set, preparing surfaces for painting i.e. dirtying
down, distributing tools to team members. The Apprentice's
job tasks may vary from painting space crafts with silver metallic for the
film Event Horizon through to using a spray gun to cover a 30" X 30" background
surface for the Star Wars film. Apprentices will also learn to apply fine
specialist finishes such as Marbling and Graining for Shakespeare In Loves'
theatre, applying paint to age a pipe to make it look old and rusty. For
the film Saving Private Ryan as well as painting a hundred helments for the
soldiers, the apprentice painter was given the job to hang wall paper to
the walls of a bombed out building set. Under instruction and supervision
from the Supervisor the apprentice then dirtied the walls down, ripping and
stripping the wallpaper to give it the 'bombed out' appearance. During the
two year Apprenticeship, the apprentice will be trained how to transfer and
build on their current skills to become a specialised scenic painter in the
film industry.
The Person
FT2 trains people who have already achieved CITB NVQ at Level 2 in Painting
& Decorating. You can gain this qualification by studying at your local
Further Education College. To work in this field you must be talented, hard
working and punctual, possess excellent craft skills in painting and decorating
and possess the ability to work well in a team.
FT2
Training80% of the training takes place on production. Apprentices work and
train with the 'master' during these training attachments. Attachments may
vary from 6-20 weeks. During this time the apprentices will be set work by
the Supervisor or Head of Department (HOD). The apprentice will learn how
to read and understand the set drawings that have been produced by the Production
Designer. The designer will also present the painters with basic ideas for
colour and finish, the painters will then produce paint samples to fit their
brief. As the majority of the work is located at the main studios situated
around the M25 area it is desirable to have a driving licence
Assessment & Achievement
FT2 Set Craft Apprentices are working towards two qualifications the
Skillset/Open Unversity/CITB NVQ Level 3 (acquired by working on the studio
floor) and the CITB NVQ at Level 3 at college by attending The College of
North West London on a day release basis. Whilst attached to a production
Apprentices will be continually assessed by their Head of Department and
or the Supervisor. FT2 will provide each apprentice with a Log Book to record
each job/task completed on the film. The apprentice will log each piece of
work, which is then signed and dated by the supervisor as a record of the
apprentices work development to date.In addition to the main training programme,
the Set Crafts Apprentice Set Painters attend short course training provided
by recognised industry training providers.
The courses currently provided to Set Craft Apprentice Painters include:
Induction Training including Manual Handling and Working at Heights
