Amish Decor for the Modern Home

In recent years, barn stars have become a trendy decorative item, and with that trend came a renewed interest in Amish style decor. Amish decor is best known for its simplicity, and keeping it simple is the number one concept that one must keep in mind when decorating a home in Amish style. Most things that work well in a rustic, country cabin would also work in Amish decor. Amish decor calls for lots of wood to be present from walls to floor to picture frames and furniture choices. The following ideas can help you to create the Amish look in your modern space.

Amish Artwork

Bringing the look of the Amish into your home is easy with the right artwork. Go for art that depicts barns, livestock, farmlands, open prairies and rustic scenes. You can also go for art objects – like actual tools, mechanical items, farm equipment, and wagon wheels and so on that would be used by the Amish to work the land.

You can arrange these objects within your space by propping them in a corner, or by displaying them in a wooden planter, among other creative options. Artwork on the walls of the Amish styled space can include the aforementioned barn stars, as well as wall mounted baskets of flowers and vintage look candle wall sconces.

Amish Furniture

Heavy furniture made from solid wood is the norm in Amish decor. Much of the furniture used in a true Amish community is handmade, and you can imitate this style by going for handmade pieces that are durable and bulky. Maple, cherry and oak hardwoods are invariably excellent selections that will hold up well to use and that ooze Amish charm. Mission-style furniture is decidedly Amish in style, as is any furniture that is boxy and rustic looking. For easy chairs or couches, go for simple leather or durable fabrics in solid colors. Furniture made from barn wood or logs is a great choice in the room decorated in Amish style.

Amish Quilts

You can’t pull off true Amish style without the addition of a few quilts. Colorful, cozy quilts are used in Amish decor as everything from bedspreads and furniture throws to areas rugs in places where there is not a lot of foot traffic. The Amish also use quilts as wall hangings and table cloths. Amish quilts are easy to spot; they are absent printed fabric and focused on solid colors and feature geometric shapes like squares and diamonds.

Amish Accents

Complete the look of your Amish styled room with Amish accents like oil-burning lamps (faux or real) and hand woven baskets. As a general rule of thumb, any accent that one might have found in a turn-of-the-century farmhouse is ideal for bringing into Amish decor, such as buckets or pails filled with dried flowers, a wooden perpetual calendar, pie safe, jelly cupboard, quilt rack, and so on.

When choosing Amish decor, think “simplistic” and incorporate items that make it easier for the Amish to live off the land without the use of electricity or modern conveniences – and you’ll find that you are able to create an authentic Amish look in your modern space!
