Working with Glazes.

Transparent oil glazes are commonly used in faux effects. Glaze dries to a soft finish and generally needs a protective coat of hard drying varnish. Glazes vary in colour but they all dry transparent. They are usually tinted to the desired colour with stainers or artists oil colours. The reason for using glazes as opposed to normal varnishes is the ease with which glaze can be manipulated.
If all you require is a straightforward coat of translucent varnish, colored to your requirements, then normal varnishes are quite adequate. If you use polyurethane varnish, which is easy to work with and dries to a good hard-wearing finish, remember that it does tend to yellow more quickly than traditional varnishes.
