Black Laquered Finish - Ebonizing

Laquered finishes can be difficult for the non-professional to apply but “ebonizing” gives a finish that gives a similar result and yet is within the capability of most home enthusiasts.

I Prepare the wood for finishing

2 When applying the stain, make sure everything you need is close to hand, as it will dry quickly. Have a few rags handy. Wearing rubber gloves, apply a liberal coating of stain to one area at a time, with a medium sized brush. Before it has time to dry, wipe off any excess with a clean rag. Leave to dry and sand lightly.

3 To seal the stain, apply a coat of French polish. This can be done using the same method as was used to apply the stain. Brush it on one area at a time, and remove the excess - with a lint-free cloth.

4 After the French polish has dried, give the piece a very light sanding with a nylon scourer (use it over a cork block when working on the flat surfaces). Dust off with a soft brush or cloth.

5 Using a tack cloth, wipe all surfaces free of dust. As soon as the cloth gets filled with dust, turn it over to a clean surface.

6 Give the can of spray varnish a very thorough shaking. Spray two light coats within two hours of each other. Hold the can about 15-20 cm (6-8 in) away from the surface as this will prevent any runs.
