Q. The paint keeps peeling from the ceiling above my shower in the shower room.
I have used good quality white emulsion paint and This forum is now closed
have now tried several times with the same result - after a few weeks, the paint cracks and peels off.
The surface underneath is plaster board and is not loose or powdery and the paint remains intact outside the area of the shower.
Why does this happen?
Should I be using a special type of paint, or is there some additional preparation needed? If so, can you please advise me on what to do and what paint to buy.

A.Ordinary emulsion paint is not recommended for a ceiling in a shower. An oil-based paint or a good quality eggshell is better. If the paint is flaking because of alkali in the plaster, then all the paint must be scraped off completely and the surface coated with a suitable alkali-resisting primer. |

A.The golden rule here is: the ceiling must be finished before you paint the walls. To get a good straight line on your wall the top edge of it must be smooth without bits and bumps. If it is not smooth, then use a piece of medium glasspaper to sand it smooth. It is essential here that you sand tight to the ceiling even if you damage the ceiling paint. That can be touched up again before you start cutting in the walls. |

A.You need some sort of scaffolding so that you are able to cut in to the ceiling and then cut in to the top of the walls. For this you will need a ladder, not too long but long enough to go fairly high up the bulk-head wall ( thats the wall facing you as you walk down the stairs). Then you need a plank. If you have a turn in your stairs near the top, the plank needs to be about a 2 feet shorter than the distance between the bulk-head wall and its opposite one. You will also need a short step-ladder to lean aginst this wall to put the plank on. You place the plank from the ladder on the bulk-head wall to the step-ladder at a height which will allow you the reach the ceiling easily. If your stairs run straight onto the landing a chair or box can be used to rest the plank on. |
