A shield can be used; it is better if it is made of metal, that way it can be thinner and less flexible. It must be cleaned with a soft cloth each time before you position it.
The best way to get a good line is to use a very worn down 1 inch brush (called a sash tool in the trade). A good sash tool will find the natural line of the skirting without too much effort.

Mark Hill Q. Hi Again, I have started painting new plaster and have notices several small brown circles in the new plaster prior to painting, After painting with a mist coat the circles come back through, I have since applied several layers of paint to the circles but still there seems to be some kind of resin in the new plaster seeping through, Never seen these before can they be sealed with any suitable subtance ?, Also thanks for your recent replay regarding paint overspray. Big Ted A. Brown stains coming through plaster can be caused by rust, where ungalvanized nails were used underneath the plaster. These are usually combined with water stains. Water stains will come through emulsion/latex, in fact any water-based paint. The solution is the paint over the stains with a solvent based paint e.g. undercoat. This will stop the stains coming through. Also you can buy a stain blocker in aerosol or brush form. Plaster and new surfaces 040709
Bozzle.com A. Further to Big Teds answer it might be pointed out that using a Stain Blocker spray on partial areas of a ceiling can cause noticeable flashing when painted over. It is recommended that either the whole ceiling be stain-blocked or the water-stained areas painted over with an oil based undercoat. It helps if this undercoat is mixed with about 25% gloss/finish paint as this provides an extra skin against the most stubborn stains. Remember that when you are mixing up this paint that you are probably needing very small amounts. Plaster and new surfaces 040709
