| pete1955 | A. Usually patchiness means uneven coverage. The golden rule for ceilings is always to apply two coats especially when painting over an already painted ceiling. Its so easy to miss bits with the first coat. If it was newly plastered some of the parts can be shiny where the skimming is less absorbant but normally an extra coat of paint will solve your problems. | Ceilings | 290501 |
| Mark Hill | Q.Can you give me any tips on avoiding spray from the roller when exterior painting, Is there anything such as a spray guard, No matter how carefull I am I always seem to get spray on windows and surrounding objects, What is the best method to cover external windows while using a roller | General Painting | 180601 |
| Bozzle.com | The cheapest and easiest way overspray from rollers is to use masking tape and newspapers to cover windows and doors. Newspapers are generally best as they are easily wrapped round pipes and other obstacles; and are easily to remove afterwards. You should also use dust-sheets to cover bushes, flowers and grass. Spray guards only prevent the paint from going outwards towards the operator. They can be useful when using a roller on pebble-dashed walls, where the roller often pulls off stones and throws them outwards. | General Painting | 180601 |
| Paula Stratford | Q. Achieving a straight line between wall and skirting. I just can’t do it! I’ve tried masking tape/no masking tape/a ruler and nothing seems to work. I have now read that Scotch brand blue tape is the best masking tape – I’ve just been using the plain ‘ol buff coloured kind. Any tips would be very gratefully received! | General Painting | 190601 |

A.The golden rule here is: the walls must be finished before you paint the skirting (or other trim). To get a good straight line on your skirting the top edge of it must be smooth without bits and bumps. If it is not smooth, then use a piece of medium glasspaper to sand it smooth. It is essential here that you sand tight to the wall even if you damage the wall paint. Dust well and touch up the wall color if necessary; it is better if you come out on the skirting so long as you don't leave a thick edge. It is not wise to use any kind of tape to protect the wall as it may pull off paint when you remove it. (continued next page) | General Painting | 190601 |
