Der Vergolder ist ein Handwerksberuf. Seine charakteristische Tätigkeit ist die Verarbeitung des Werkstoffs Blattgold. Die Bezeichnung Fassmaler beschreibt eine andere Spezifikation dieses Berufes, das Fassen, d. h. Bemalen von Skulpturen. Der Vergolder bearbeitet Objekte aus Holz, Stuck oder Metall und veredelt deren Oberfläche durch die Auflage verschiedener Blattmetalle. Die Ornamentierung von Oberflächen in verschiedenen, zeichnerischen und malerischen Techniken sowie das Aufbringen von plastischen Verzierungsmassen, gehören ebenfalls zu den fachspezifischen Merkmalen dieses Berufs. Die Fassmalerei beinhaltet neben der farblichen Gestaltung von Figuren und Möbeln, auch die Erzeugung bestimmter Materialimitationen wie Marmor- und Holzmalerei. Traditionelle Arbeitsgebiete des Vergolders sind seit jeher die Ausstattung von Kirchen und Schlössern, die Vergoldung von Statuen und Monumenten sowie die Herstellung von Bilderrahmen. Entwicklung des Berufes. Schon vor Jahrtausenden wurde in Indien eine verwandte Art des Vergoldens praktiziert. Über Ägypten kam sie nach Europa und entwickelte sich zur heutigen Technik. So haben sich die wesentlichen Berufsinhalte, d. h. die Techniken und Werkzeuge des Vergolders seit Jahrhunderten kaum verändert. Nur im restauratorischen Bereich findet eine stetige Entwicklung statt. Durch neuartige Geräte und Apparaturen, z. B.
